Which card machine is right for me?

This entirely depends on you and the needs of your business.

customer

We find that countertop card machines are your best bet if you’re a retail business, for instance.

That’s because this type of card machine is ideal for fixed location payments. It does exactly what it says on the tin - providing a hassle-free way of accepting card payments, right at the designated point of sale.

Then, there’s portable card machines. Portable card machines are the perfect way to accept card payments while you’re on your feet.

Usually this might mean settling up the bill at a restaurant table, for example. You can take the terminal right to the customer with a portable card machine - as they’re connected via WiFi.

So, this covers card payments under a single roof - but what if you’re out on the road?

Mobile card readers connect via GPRS, so your business can roam freely as required. This makes them a
handy solution for delivery services, tradespeople and even the likes of market sellers doing business out
in the open.

Whichever card payment machine you choose - rest assured that you’ll be able to accept quick and effective contactless payments across all types of terminals. Not only does this provide your customers with more alternative payment options, but also enables you to serve them more efficiently with quicker transactions - no matter where the payment is made.

The benefits of taking card payments

It's a fact.

Far less people are carrying cash around today than they were 10 years ago. According to UK Finance - it’s predicted that cash will only account for around 16% of all payments by 2027. That’s a small proportion when you consider the amount of different payments and transactions you could make.

Card payments are only becoming more and more common, so opening up your business to this payment method will broaden your horizons in the long term. Accepting card payments actually makes it much easier for your customers. It takes away the inconvenience of needing to physically withdraw cash from an ATM, and speeds up the transaction process - meaning less time spent queueing, or dividing out change. It also has an added security benefit. With less cash lying around, your business is less vulnerable to theft. Digital payments are much more secure - especially contactless payments, which alleviate the need to type out your PIN in public view.

All of our new Castles card machines are certified to the industry's latest security standard PCI PTS 4.0 or PCI PTS 5.0.

Credit card machine FAQs

Card machines are simple to use. First and foremost, they need to be connected to either WiFi, GPRS, or an analogue phone line. To accept card payments, the customer needs to insert their card for Chip and PIN, or simply hover their card over the card reader for contactless (transactions £45 and under).

Essentially, they all reference the same thing. A PDQ machine isn’t any different to a card machine - nor is a card reader. They all perform the same function - in processing data to perform a digital transaction through Chip and PIN or contactless.

Yes - all of our card machines can accept contactless payments. All the customer needs to do is present their contactless device or debit or credit card  to the card machine screen.

With Handepay, you can accept both debit and credit cards through our card machine terminals. We also enable you to accept contactless payments through Apple, Samsung and Google Pay via the appropriate devices.

With Handepay you will pay a rental fee for your card machine and then a small percentage of each transaction value. You won’t pay a minimum monthly service charge (MMSC), authorisation fees or PCI compliance and non-compliance fees.

If you have an up-to-date card machine, you should be able to accept mobile payments like those using an eWallet on a smartphone or wearable device.

These payments work just the same as a contactless card payment. Simply ask the customer to place their device on the card machine, and the transaction will be completed in a few seconds, provided they have the money in their account.

Older card machines may not have the technology built in to accept these newer types of payments.

Your card machine may display types of payments you’re able to accept.

If you’re not sure, the easiest thing to do is contact us and we’ll be able to tell you if your current card machine is able to accept mobile payments.

It doesn’t matter whether you’re new to card payments or looking to switch - we’d love to discuss your card machine options for your business.
