What is the difference between a card reader and a card machine?

There’s absolutely no difference between a Handepay card reader and a card machine. You may also hear or see phrases such as ‘card terminal’, ‘Chip and PIN machine’ or ‘PDQ machine’ but they all do the same job.

They all help you to grow your business by allowing you to take card payments for your goods and services.

With a Handepay card reader, your customers can choose the way they want to pay – whether it’s Chip and PIN or contactless payment, you’ll have it covered.

Our card reader machines are easy to set up and come with a ‘plug and play’ installation guide. To accept payments, your customer simply needs to insert their card for Chip and PIN, or just hover their card over the card reader for contactless transactions.

All of our new Spire card readers are certified to the industry's latest security standard PCI PTS 4.0.

The benefits of taking card payments

Card payments are increasing in popularity, so allowing your customers to use this payment method will only broaden your horizons and help business growth in the long term.

How can a card reader contribute to business growth?

It’s predicted that cash will only account for around 16% of all payments by 2027, according to UK Finance.

Consumers now expect to be able to pay by card wherever they shop – which means they’re no longer limited to just the cash they carry in their pocket. This leads to higher value and impulse purchases.

Having a payment card reader actually makes it much easier for your customers. It speeds up the transaction process - meaning less time spent queueing while you’re counting out change!

Payment card readers also enhance your business’ security. Digital payments are much more secure and you’ll carry less cash on your business premises.

Card Reader FAQs

What is a card reader used for?

A card reader works just like any other card payment machine to accept money from your customers for your goods and services. As long as it’s connected to either WiFi, GPRS, or an analogue phone line depending on the card reader type - customers can make Chip and PIN payments and contactless payments as normal.

What are the costs associated with a card reader?

The cost of your card reader depends on your business and the type of card reader you choose. Our pricing is tailored to your needs and there are no hidden fees. You won’t pay minimum monthly service charges, authorisation fees, joining fees, PCI DSS compliance and non-compliance or fees for online statements.

You’ll just pay a monthly rental fee for the card reader itself, plus a small percentage for each transaction you make through the card reader – it’s as simple as that!

Can I take contactless transactions through a card reader?

Yes. All of our card readers accept contactless payments including Apple, Samsung and Google Pay.

What cards can I accept?

With Handepay, you can accept all major debit and credit cards through our card reader machines. Your customers can also pay using contactless, whether by tapping their card or using Apple, Samsung and Google Pay via their appropriate devices.

What’s the best card reader?

This all depends on your business. We offer a range of card readers to suit every type of business. Get in touch so that we can discuss your needs and provide you with a tailored quote.
